Why I'm Loving This Warm Terracotta Watercolor Palette for Portraits
If there's one thing I love almost as much as painting, it's unboxing new art materials.
Walking into an art store feels like walking into a candy shop, I want to see and would love to buy 😂every brush, every tube of paint, every sketchbook. And when a package full of watercolor supplies arrives at my door, I become like a little kid opening a surprise gift.
Last month, I received some wonderful new art materials from Fuumuui, and over the next few weeks I'll be sharing them with you as I paint with them. I always enjoy trying new materials because they inspire me to experiment and discover new ways of creating.
Lately, my painting table has been filled with portraits.
I've been creating wedding commissions, anniversary gifts, and the Lady of the Month & her dog illustrations that many of you have been enjoying. Because of that, I've been searching for colors that feel warm, soft, and timeless.
When I opened the Fuumuui 24-Color Opaque Semi-Solid Watercolor Set – Warm Terracotta, I immediately knew I would be reaching for it again and again.
What caught my attention first wasn't the packaging—it was the beautiful selection of colors.
Instead of bright primary colors, this palette is filled with gorgeous earthy shades: warm browns, wheat, apricot beige, coral pinks, dusty roses, and muted purples. They remind me of vintage photographs, old European buildings, and the soft golden light of late summer afternoons.
I used this palette to paint my August Lady, and I absolutely loved how naturally the colors worked together.

One thing I really enjoy is how versatile these paints are.
If you add plenty of water, they behave like traditional transparent watercolors, allowing you to create delicate washes and soft skin tones.
But if you use them with very little water, they become beautifully opaque—almost like gouache. I found this especially helpful for building depth, refining details, adding highlights, or making small corrections without losing the harmony of the painting.
For someone who loves painting portraits, florals, animals, and botanical subjects, that flexibility is incredibly useful.
Personally, I think this has become one of my favorite color palettes. The warm terracotta tones create such a cozy, nostalgic feeling, and I find myself reaching for these colors over and over again.
